How do I compare savings accounts?

Set your balance and how long you'll save, then sort by non-promotional rate, our rating or total savings. Each card shows what you'd have at the end of your savings period, so you can compare accounts on one number.

The savings accounts page lists accounts and works out what each would give you on your own balance and timeline. Change the filters and the list and the totals update.

The filters

  • Balance: slide it, or click the number and type your own amount.
  • Savings period: how long you plan to keep the money in the account, with marks from 1 month up to 10 years.
  • Has promotional rate: only accounts with a promotional rate.
  • Institution: limit the list to the banks you pick.

Sorting and reading each card

Use Sort by to order the list by Non-Promotional Rate (High to Low), Our Rating (High to Low) or Total Savings (High to Low). Above the list you'll see how many accounts were found and how many have promotional rates. Choose Show More to see more accounts.

Each card leads with Total Savings for your savings period. When a cash back rebate offer applies to the account, that amount is included in the total and the card says so (for example, "including $50 rebate"). The card also lists regular interest, monthly fee and any welcome bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Total Savings is calculated for your balance and savings period, and includes any rebate that applies, so it can rank accounts differently from the rate alone. Use the sort menu to switch between the two.

The banking hub at /banking links to chequing accounts, savings accounts, GIC rates and bank reviews.
