Weâre often told to apply for more than one credit card to help build our credit score but how do we actually know which cards work best together? Jane, a personal finance creator on TikTok, has gained popularity for her Credit Card Combination series, where she breaks down how to strategically pair and optimize Canadian credit cards for maximum rewards and benefits. Driven by her passion for what she jokingly calls a âminor in Canadian Credit Card Strategies,â Jane has spent the past year evaluating and optimizing different combinations from her viewers.
Here are her top five combinations and what you can learn from each.

đł American Express Cobalt â Point Accumulator
This card is your primary driver for accumulating travel rewards
đł Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite â Travel Perks
The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite covers situations where the Amex Cobalt isn't accepted and offers:
This card is ideal to use abroad after booking your trips with points so you can still earn value on purchases without worrying about FX fees.
đł Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard â Costco & Bills
The Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard offers solid cash back for your bills and Costco runs:
This card has no annual fee but still provides travel insurance and unlimited 2% cash back.
"I really like this combination because it lets you cover all three card brands without adding in a repaid Mastercard, like I usually mention in my videos. Plus, you get the best of both worldsâearning travel rewards and cash back. Your Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard helps you cover your Rogers, Fido, Comwave, or Shaw bill with its 1.5Ă cash back boost, while your Amex Cobalt lets you book flights at a high cent-per-point redemption value through transferring to airline partners. Add in the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite, which offers no foreign transaction fees and six annual lounge passes, and youâve got the trip covered. Plus, your Scotiabank Scene+ points can be redeemed toward accommodations, making this setup the perfect vacation redemption." - Jane

đł Scotiabank Gold American Express â Main Points Driver
This card is your primary driver for high-accelerator spending categories and your travel abroad card. An alternative to this card is the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard.
đł TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite â Extra Travel Perks
The TD First Class Travel is your backup when Amex isn't accepted while still allowing you to earn:
Other cards that can also work are the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite and the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard, or you can have this downgraded to a basic card to save on annual fees if the the extra travel perks are not necessary.
đł Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard â Manage Bills and 2% Cash Back
The Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard means you're a Rogers, Fido, Comwave, or Shaw customer and you still like to earn cash back:
This card has no annual fee but still provides travel insurance and unlimited 2% cash back.
"I often get asked to compare the Scotiabank Gold American Express and the American Express Cobalt, since their earn rates are quite similar. My take is this: if you can maximize Amex Membership Rewards points by transferring them to travel partners and redeem for flights at a high cents-per-point value, then the Amex Cobalt is the stronger choice. However, if you prefer straightforward redemptions at a fixed 1 cent per point, the Scotiabank Gold Amex comes out aheadâespecially since it can earn 6x points per $1 at select grocery stores. So if you're using this combination, youâre likely a Rogers, Fido, Comwave, or Shaw customer who values both travel rewards and cash back. You know how to maximize your Scotiabank Scene+ earnings on everyday spending with high multipliers on the Scotiabank Gold American Express, while putting your recurring bills (other than your phone or internet) on the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard to earn a steady 2% cash back. You also take full advantage of the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite by booking through Expedia for TD and making good use of your four annual lounge passes." - Jane

đł RBC ION+ Visa â Main Points Driver
This card is your primary driver for accumulating points.
đł RBC Avion Visa Infinite â Redeem Avion Elite Points
The RBC Avion Visa Infinite allows you to have the Avion Premium points (from the ION+ Visa) to Avion Elite points:

đł BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard â Travel Benefits
The BMO Ascend World Elite also gives you access to:
This card complements the Avion duo by supplementing the travel benefits. Alternative options to this card are the American Express Gold Rewards or the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite.
"I get a lot of questions about which cards go well with the Amex Gold. So if if that's you, here's how I'd make it work. If youâre using this combo, you value flexibility by having the ability to book flights, accommodations, or vacation packages with Avion points, while also having the option to earn BMO Rewards. The BMO Ascend World Elite fills in the travel perks that the Avion cards donât offer, and while thereâs some overlap in bonus categories, your RBC ION+ Visa remains the main driver for everyday point accumulation, with the BMO Ascend stepping in as your Mastercard for Costco purchases." - Jane

Hereâs an optimized card rotation to help you maximize your cash back while keeping annual fees low. Use the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite for the highest cash back on recurring bill payments and groceries. You might be wondering: How do I manage the annual fees for two or three premium credit cards?
If youâre not planning to travel or take full advantage of your travel perks in a given year, consider downgrading those premium cards temporarily. This helps you save on fees while focusing on earning rewards with your main driver.
Not every card has the option to waive the annual fee, but those issued by the Big Five banks often doâso make sure to take advantage of it if you can!
That said, if you can calculate your annual spending and compare it to the rewards and benefits you earn, you might find that the value you earn actually exceeds the cost of the annual feeâmaking it worthwhile to keep the card. Ultimately, the key is to avoid paying high fees on cards youâre not fully utilizing or that no longer align with your spending habits.
