Our take

CIBC Aventura® Visa* Card for Business

If your business flies Air Canada regularly, this card pays for itself quickly. You get 2x Aeroplan points across a broad set of categories — travel, dining, shipping, telecom — plus tangible perks like free checked bags and Maple Leaf Lounge guest passes. The welcome offer of up to 75,000 points is generous, and the first-year fee is rebated. The catch: bonus earning is capped at $80,000 in annual purchases across the entire account, and the card’s value drops sharply if you don’t redeem through Aeroplan. Not the right pick for businesses that want cashback simplicity or fly with multiple airlines.

  • First-year annual fee rebate
  • Welcome offer up to 75,000 Aeroplan points
  • Free first checked bag for the cardholder + companions
  • Up to 4 Maple Leaf Lounge one-time guest passes per year (earned via spend)
  • $180 annual fee
  • Best value is for Air Canada / Aeroplan loyalists
  • Bonus earning capped at $80,000 annual spend
  • Welcome bonus requires significant spend to maximize ($40,000 in year one)
  • Not a simple “cash back” style card for businesses that want easy redemption

National Bank Platinum Business Mastercard

A flat 1.5 points per dollar on everything, no caps, no category juggling. For businesses with varied spending that don’t want to think about optimizing categories, this card keeps it simple. The $125 annual fee is reasonable and the points never expire as long as your account is open. The trade-off is that you’re locked into National Bank’s À la carte Rewards for the best value — and the insurance and travel perks are minimal compared to what you’d get from premium cards at a similar price point. Best for businesses that value predictability over maximum return.

  • Earn 1.5 points per $1 spent with no purchase limit
  • Available regardless of company size or industry
  • Ability to combine points with a personal National Bank rewards card
  • $125 annual fee ($50 per additional card)
  • Points program is most valuable within National Bank’s rewards ecosystem
  • Limited insurance coverage compared to premium competitors

Offer applies to newly approved Credit Card Accounts; transfers from another CIBC credit card to any CIBC Aventura® Visa* Card for Business (regardless of the annual fee) are excluded.

Credit Card Account must be open and in Good Standing at the time the Aventura Points are awarded. Aventura Points are awarded to the Primary Cardholder within 8 weeks after all qualifying net Purchase(s) are posted to the credit card account. The following do not qualify as Purchases: Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, CIBC Convenience Cheques, interest, fees, payments, and Aventura Points redemptions. It may take up to several business days for purchases to be posted to the Credit Card Account. This offer is non-transferable. This offer may be withdrawn or changed without prior notice at any time. CIBC may approve your application, but you are not eligible to receive this Offer if you have opened, transferred or cancelled another Aventura card within the last 12 months. This offer may be revoked if the Business or any Cardholder appear to be manipulating or abusing it, or are engaged in any suspicious or fraudulent activity, as determined by CIBC in its sole discretion.

This offer does not apply to annual fees for additional Cards that are added after the application is submitted. This offer applies for the first year only. If the Business qualifies for the rebate, it will be awarded to the Credit Card Account and will appear as a credit against the applicable annual fee(s) within 2 statements after the eligible Credit Card Account is opened. The new Credit Card Account must be open and in Good Standing at the time the rebate is awarded.

If the application for an eligible card is not approved, you may be considered for another card (as disclosed in the credit card application). If the application is approved for that card, this annual fee rebate offer will apply in the amount of the annual fee, if any, of the alternate card or Credit Card Account, as applicable.

The over $1,800 value is based on the combined total value of: the maximum redemption value of $1,600 for 70,000 Aventura Points on two long-haul airfares ($800 travel value each), based on the Aventura Airline Rewards Chart, before taxes and other charges, as of March 1, 2023; and an annual fee rebate for the first year (up to $180) for the Primary Cardholder and three additional cards ($150).

For full details, review the maximum ticket prices and Aventura Flight Rewards Chart at the CIBC Rewards Centre. Some airlines may impose fees, restrictions or other conditions on air travel.

To obtain an Airline Travel Reward using the Aventura Airline Rewards Chart, you must redeem at least 80% of the total number of Aventura Points required to purchase it. If you don’t have enough Aventura Points to purchase an Airline Travel Reward in full (but have at least 80% of the required number of Aventura Points), you may have the Centre charge an amount to your Card to cover the Points Deficit, excluding Taxes and Other Charges. For a business class flight, you may have the Centre charge an amount to your Card to cover the Points Deficit for an economy class ticket in the same flight segment as the business class ticket you want, excluding Taxes and Other Charges. If you have the Centre charge an amount to your Card to cover the Points Deficit for an Airline Travel Reward and you are advised that the Aventura Travel Reward is refundable, then, in the event of a refund, the amount previously charged to your Card will not be refunded to your Credit Card Account and instead you will receive Aventura Points equal to the Points Deficit.

Capitalized terms used and not defined herein have the meanings given to them in the CIBC Business Cardholder Agreement (Personal Liability).

Transferring Points can be done between Aventura credit cards through the CIBC Rewards Centre or by calling 1-888-232-5656. Authorized Users cannot perform points transfer transactions, but will be able to view any points transfer activity on the Primary’s account in their account history. Points entered must be positive and within the minimum of 1 and the maximum of total points available in the account, at the time of performing points transfers. The Credit Card Accounts that you wish to transfer points between must be in good standing.

10Aventura Points can be redeemed for up to 100% of the cost of airfare as well as (if you have sufficient points) for taxes and other charges on airfare purchased through the CIBC Rewards Centre. You must book all flights through the CIBC Rewards Centre. Some taxes and other charges may be collected locally or when you are travelling, and cannot be prepaid. Ask an Aventura Travel Assistant for details.

11Insurance coverage(s) included with CIBC credit cards are underwritten by Belair Insurance Company Inc. You may contact the insurer at 1-866-363-3338 in Canada and the U.S. or collect from elsewhere at 905-403-3338 or visit cibc.client.insure. Different cards will have different coverage(s). To learn about which coverage(s) are included with a specific card, and important information regarding coverage eligibility requirements, benefits, limitations and exclusions, review the Certificate(s) of Insurance in your card package and CIBC Agreements and Insurance. Some insurance coverage(s) require purchase(s), car rentals, common carrier fares, accommodations and other trip costs to be charged to the card, or be for business purposes, to activate coverage. Other conditions may also apply. Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage Insurance (CLDI) is available for a rental period of up to 48 days for rental vehicles with a MSRP of up to $85,000 CAD and not otherwise excluded from coverage. The full cost of the rental must be charged to the card and the rental agency’s Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) must be declined. CLDI provides coverage up to the actual cash value (ACV) of the rental vehicle as defined in your Certificate of Insurance. Note that some rental agencies may assess their damages at an amount greater than the ACV of the rental vehicle and you may be liable to them for the difference. Before declining the rental agency's CDW or LDW, you should read carefully and compare the terms of the rental agreement, the CLDI Certificate of Insurance in your card package and any other insurance you own to decide which coverage best meets your protection needs. Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Insurance may not cover certain health/medical conditions that are not stable before your trip. Certain coverages are “excess insurance” (all other sources of insurance and recovery must be exhausted before coverage is available).

12CIBC Travel Insurance is underwritten by member companies of The Co-operators, and is administered by TIC Travel Insurance Coordinators Ltd. No insurance is payable for any pre-existing condition unless you have applied and qualified for pre-existing condition coverage and received a Guarantee of Coverage from the insurer.
