Instead of having a list of enticing rewards, the Scotiabank Value Visa Card lures in its customers with much lower interest rates compared to other credit cards on the market.
If you think the Scotiabank Value Visa Card is the right credit card for you, here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can apply:
You can bypass the navigational part of this process by selecting the “Apply Now” button beneath the Scotiabank Value Visa Card featured on this blog post. This will take you directly to your application.
To make up for the rewards section, we’ve compiled this comprehensive list of the Scotiabank Value Visa Card’s benefits.
It’s already helpful that the Scotiabank Value Visa Card’s annual fee is considered low, but what’s even better is that the cost is completely waived during your first year of membership.
If you thought the waived first year fee was good, you’ll be even more pleased to hear that the Scotiabank Value Visa Card offers a generous welcome bonus. As an introductory offer, pocket low interest rates on balance transfers for the first several months of membership. After this promotional period ends, you can still partake in this card’s low balance transfer rates overall.
These two factors combined make the Scotiabank Value Visa Card one of the best balance transfer credit cards in Canada.
Speaking of those low-interest rates, perhaps the most important aspect of the Scotiabank Value Visa Card is how little you’ll be expected to pay back in every interest category. Enjoy the same low-interest rates on cash advances, purchases, and balance transfers. Unsurprisingly then, you'll also find this card featured as one of our best low-interest credit cards in Canada.
Get up to 5¢/L in value on fuel purchases at Shell stations.
With a Scotiabank Value Visa Card linked to a Shell Go+ Account, you can save up to 5 cents per litre on fuel at participating Shell locations in Canada: an instant 3 cents per litre discount (up to 1,000 litres/month), plus earn up to 2 cents per litre in Scene+ points value (1 point per litre on all grades, and 1 bonus point per litre on Premium fuel). The points are worth up to 2 cents per litre based on a redemption rate of $10 per 1,000 points used toward fuel. Actual savings vary based on fuel grade, card linkage, and how you redeem your points.
Planning to take a road trip? Then take advantage of worldwide Avis car rental discounts.
Since it’s such a straightforward card, the Scotiabank Value Visa Card is bound to fall short in a couple of categories.
Here are some of this card’s drawbacks:
It’s no secret that this card is lacking in the rewards department. Since the Scotiabank Value Visa Card comes with an annual fee (although low), it makes sense that some applicants are hesitant to sign up, especially considering there are other similar low-interest cards equipped with rewards programs.
The insurance category doesn’t compensate much for what’s lacking in the previous two categories, but, for a price, you do have the option to add balance protection to your card – which provides coverage to help you make minimum payments towards your balance or assists in paying it off completely.
If you’re not convinced that the Scotiabank Value Visa Card is the right low-interest credit card for you, then allow us to compare this card against some of its top competitors. You may even find that some of the following cards tack on more perks that would make your application worthwhile.

The MBNA True Line Mastercard offers an even better and longer promotional interest rate on balance transfers. When it comes to extra add-ons, however, this contender lacks coverage and only provides car rental discounts at Avis and Budget locations as a benefit. While the purchase interest rate on this card is lower, its cash advance and non-promotional balance transfer rates are higher. That said, the MBNA True Line Mastercard avoids annual fees.
Verdict: The MBNA True Line Mastercard has a better balance transfer promotional period for no annual fee, but the Scotiabank Value Visa Card has better overall interest base rates on cash advances and balance transfers, plus more benefits.
The RBC Visa Classic Low Rate Option provides the same introductory interest rate on balance transfers for a bit longer. Even the base interest rates on purchases, cash advances, and non-promotional balancer transfers are better. Like the Value Visa, the annual fee is also waived for the first year. Thankfully, this card offers basic coverage like extended warranty and purchase protection insurance. Cardholders also receive discounts on gas and DashPass, plus extra Be Well points per dollar spent on eligible products at Rexall.
Verdict: The RBC Visa Classic Low Rate Option has a better balance transfer promotional period, better base interest rates overall, more benefits, and superior coverage.
The BMO Preferred Rate Mastercard supplies cardholders with a lower and much longer balance transfer promotional period. While the coverage on this card is more extensive, it only includes an Instacart+ discount as an added benefit. As far as base interest rates go, however, its rates on cash advances and non-promotional balance transfers are higher.
Verdict: The BMO Preferred Rate Mastercard has a better balance transfer promotional period and coverage, but the Scotiabank Value Visa has better benefits and base interest rates on cash advances and balance transfers.
The Desjardins Flexi Visa Card has a few advantages over the Scotiabank Value Visa Card. For starters, while it lacks a low-interest promotional offer, it offers much lower base interest rates on purchases, cash advances, and balance transfers. Secondly, this card provides extensive coverage, including valuable protections like trip interruption, trip cancellation, and travel medical insurance. The best part? This competitor avoids annual fees.
Verdict: The Desjardins Flexi Visa Card offers better base interest rates and superior coverage, all for no annual fee.
It’s estimated that you’ll need a recommended “good” credit score to apply for the Scotiabank Value Visa Card. A “good” credit score is a score of about 660.
The Scotiabank Value Visa Card has a minimum credit limit of $500.
The Scotiabank Value Visa Card has an interest rate of 13.99% on cash advances, purchases, and balance transfers (after the introductory promotional period).
