Overall, the MBNA True Line Mastercard offers the best 0% introductory balance transfer offer in Canada, given that it provides a generous 0% promo period—beating almost any other card in terms of interest savings. As a result, this card was also selected as the best overall balance transfer credit card in Canada. There is no annual fee, and the purchase interest rate after the promotional period ends is also very reasonable. To learn more about this card read MBNA True Line Mastercard review.
The BMO Preferred Rate Mastercard currently offers an even longer 0% interest introductory period on balance transfers with a lower transfer fee. While the card isn't technically annual fee-free, the yearly cost is waived for the first year of membership. This contender also offers basic extended warranty and purchase protection insurance, alongside an Instacart+ discount. The purchase interest rate after the promotional period is also almost as low as the MBNA True Line. See more in our BMO Preferred Rate Mastercard review.
This card also comes with a 0% interest promotional offer on balance transfers; however, there's a major catch that prevents it from taking the top spot. The offer states that you can 'transfer up to 50% of your assigned credit limit' during the introductory period. Users looking for balance transfer cards typically want to transfer as much as possible, and this 50% cap can be a limitation, especially if their approved credit limit is low. This significant drawback places the card lower in the rankings. Luckily though, cardholders receive a 2-year annual fee rebate, gas discounts, and Skip+ perks. Learn more in our CIBC Select Visa Card review.
Uniquely, the TD Low Rate Visa Credit Card offers a 0% introductory interest offer on purchases, but only for half of the year. While this card boasts basic insurance and extra Stars at participating Starbucks stores, it comes with an annual fee, one that's not waived for the first year of membership. Get all the details in our TD Low Rate Visa Credit Card review.
A 0% interest credit card, also known as a zero percent introductory interest card, is a type of credit card that charges no interest for a limited time on certain types of transactions, such as purchases, balance transfers, or both. Once the promotional period ends, the standard interest rate applies.
In Canada, the majority of zero percent introductory interest credit cards offer balance transfer promotions, but as you can see above, the TD Low Rate Visa Credit Card provides cardholders with a short-term promotional interest rate on purchases.
A zero percent balance transfer offer allows you to move existing credit card debt from one card to another and pay no interest on the transferred amount for a limited time. This promotional period typically ranges from six to twelve months, giving you a chance to reduce or eliminate your debt faster without additional interest piling up. This grace period alone is what makes 0% transfer credit cards some of the top credit cards in Canada for those who carry a balance. You can compare how much interest could be saved with a balance transfer using the Credit Card Balance Transfer Calculator tool.
While the transfer itself is interest free during the promo period, most cards charge a one-time balance transfer fee, usually around one to three percent of the transferred amount. In Canada, zero percent balance transfer offers are uncommon but do exist, mostly from a few select issuers. These offers can be especially useful for people carrying high interest credit card balances, as they provide a temporary break from interest charges. However, it is important to pay off the full balance before the promotional period ends, as the standard interest rate will apply to any remaining amount afterward. If you are unfamiliar with how promotional rates differ from regular charges, understanding how credit card interest works in Canada can help you make better decisions when using or switching credit cards. It is also important to pay off the full balance before the promotional period ends, as the standard interest rate will apply to any remaining amount afterward.
