Best Credit card for Amazon Canada

Updated: Mar 2

best credit card amazon

Introduction

You might be someone who regularly purchases from Amazon.

I certainly am!

And knowing which credit card to use when making those purchases is important because, over the course of time, you might lose out on a lot of credit card rewards.

Depending on the amount you spend on Amazon, the best card might differ, so I'd recommend checking out our rewards calculator and putting your Amazon spending there to find the best card specifically for you. Also, if you decide to get a credit card, we are offering rebates on a range of cards, so get your rebate only from the link below:

But if you don't want to go through that process, here are some of the best credit cards for Amazon in Canada to help maximize the rewards you earn:

List of Best Credit Cards for Amazon

Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard

Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard card

The best card to use for Amazon purchases, in fact, is the Amazon.ca rewards Mastercard issued by MBNA. But under one big condition:

If you are subscribed to Amazon Prime!

Reward Structure

The reward program for this card changes based on whether you have Amazon Prime or not. If you have Amazon Prime, the reward rate would be:

  • 2.5% on Amazon.ca, Wholefood and Foreign Purchases

  • 1% on everything else

And if you are not an Amazon Prime member, the rewards for this card would be:

  • 1.5% on Amazon.ca and Wholefood

  • 1% on everything else

A 1% drop (40% decrease) is pretty substantial if you don't have Prime, so in cases that you don't have Prime, it's better to use some of the cards we are going to recommend below; otherwise, this card is the best card you can make your purchases with to maximize your rewards.

Some other Key Highlights of Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard

  • Introductory Offer: New cardholders can enjoy a 5% return at Amazon.ca, grocery stores, and restaurants for the first six months on the first $3,000 in purchases.

  • No Annual Fee: This card does not charge an annual fee, making it a cost-effective option.

  • Additional Benefits: Includes extended warranty, purchase assurance, car rental discounts, and emergency services.

Rogers Mastercard® card

The second best-recommended card for Amazon purchases is none other than One of the best Credit cards in Canada and the best Cashback card in Canada (For Rogers, Fido and Shaw customers), Rogers Mastercard!

Like the Amazon.ca reward card, the reward system of this card is dependent on a condition, which is whether you have a Rogers, Fido or Shaw service.

Reward Structure

If you have the qualifying service, the rewards of this card would be:

  • 2% cashback on all eligible purchases if you have one qualifying service with Rogers, Fido, or Shaw. If you redeem your cash for one of these services, you will get a 1.5x bonus, meaning it would equal 3% cashback, even beating the reward rate of the Amazon.ca reward card.

If you don't have the qualifying service, the rewards of this card would be:

  • 2% on USD purchases and 1% on everything else if you don't have one qualifying service.

If you don't have a Rogers service, then the other cards in the list might be better for you, but if you do, we highly recommend this card because not only it's great for Amazon purchases, but it's also great for all your other purchases as well!

Some other Key Highlights of Rogers Mastercard

  • No Annual Fee: This card has no annual fee, adding to its value proposition.

  • Roam Like Home Benefit: Offers five free Roam Like Home days annually for eligible Rogers mobile customers, valued at approximately $75.

  • Balance Protection Insurance: Assists in paying minimum payments in events like illness, job loss, etc.

  • Flexibility in Rewards Redemption: Rewards can be redeemed for cash or towards Rogers products, with an added redemption bonus for eligible services.

American Express SimplyCash Preferred

American Express SimplyCash Preferred card

Another solid, well-versed card is the SimplyCash Preferred from American Express. This card is also a pretty good card and has high cashback, the same as the Rogers Mastercard, but it is a slightly worse version of the card in cases where you have a qualifying Rogers service. If you don't have a qualifying Rogers service, then this card is one of the best cards to go for.

Reward Structure

  • 4% cash back on gas

  • 4% cash back on groceries (maximum $1200 annually)

  • 2% cash back on all other credit card purchases.

If you don't have a Rogers Service, then this card beats the Rogers Mastercard in terms of rewards. But if you have a Rogers service, it probably is a better choice to go for Rogers because SimplyCash's preferred has a $120 annual fee whereas the Rogers card is free. Suppose you care a lot about benefits and not only rewards. In that case, SimplyCash is probably a better card because it has many insurances and extra offers that you can take advantage of.

Some other Key Highlights of American Express SimplyCash Preferred

  • Comprehensive Travel Insurance: Includes out-of-province medical insurance, flight and baggage delay insurance, and travel accident insurance.

  • Vehicle and Property Protection: Offers Car Rental Theft and Damage Insurance and Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance.

  • Purchase Security: Features Purchase Protection Insurance and an Extended Warranty on new purchases.

  • Exclusive American Express Benefits: Access to American Express Experiences and Offers, enhancing your lifestyle and travel experiences.

  • Mobile Device Coverage: Provides Mobile Device Insurance, safeguarding against

Rogers World Elite® Mastercard®

Rogers World Elite® Mastercard® card

The Rogers World Elite is also a good option if you could qualify for it. This card is great, but there are requirements that not everyone meets. It needs either $80K individual income or $150K.

If you have those, then great!

Reward Structure

  • 3% cashback on all U.S dollar purchases

  • 1.5% cashback on everything else

In the case of buying from Amazon, the 1.5% is the one that matters the most, which is a very good rate of cashback for Amazon.

In addition to the good cashback rate on all purchases, one very good aspect of this is the many extra benefits you get for no annual fee!

Some other Key Highlights of Rogers World Elite Mastercard

  • Welcome Bonus: $25 in cashback rewards upon the first card purchase within three months of receiving the card.

  • Travel Benefits: Includes complimentary membership to Mastercard Travel Pass provided by DragonPass with access to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide.

  • Insurance Benefits: Coverage includes extended warranty and purchase protection, rental car collision/damage, emergency medical, trip interruption, and trip cancellation.

  • No Annual Fee: The card has no annual fee and offers additional cardholder benefits like transaction monitoring, zero liability for unauthorized use, and balance protection insurance.

American Express Cobalt® card

The American Express Cobalt® Card is a pretty solid card to use for your Amazon purchases. It might not beat the cards mentioned above, but it comes pretty close. The reason Cobalt makes it to the list is that it's a well-rounded card overall.

Reward Structure

  • Food and Dining: Earn 5 points per dollar on restaurants, fast food, coffee shops, food delivery, and groceries.

  • Streaming Subscriptions: Earn 3 points per dollar on eligible streaming services in Canada.

  • Gas and Commuter Transportation: Earn 2 points per dollar on gasoline stations, travel services, and local commuter transportation, including ride-share.

  • All Other Purchases: Earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

Even though Amazon purchases fall into the 1 point per dollar spent category, if you are a traveller, each point would roughly have a value of 2.1 cents, equal to (2.1%) cashback. As mentioned, the rewards you earn in the other categories are massive, and therefore, you need to evaluate whether this card is worth it or not because it has an annual fee of $155.8, which not everyone wants to pay. It is also good to note that The American Express Cobalt Card not only excels in rewards for food and dining but also provides a rich array of benefits, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of spending habits, including Amazon purchases.

I recommend looking at our rewards calculator to see whether this card would be the best card for you or not.

Some other Key Highlights of American Express Cobalt

  • Travel Insurance: Includes comprehensive travel coverage.

  • Extended Warranty and Purchase Protection: Provides added security on purchases.

  • Car Rental and Mobile Device Insurance: Offers protection for car rentals and mobile devices.

  • Exclusive American Express Experiences: Access to unique events and offers.

  • Medical Insurance and More: Includes out-of-province medical insurance up to $5 million, flight delay and baggage delay insurance, hotel burglary insurance, lost or stolen baggage insurance, travel accident insurance up to $250K, and car rental theft and damage insurance up to $85,000

How to maximize your Savings on your Amazon.ca Purchases

Even though these cards give huge cashback or points on Amazon purchases, be careful when redeeming your rewards! It's usually best not to go for Amazon gift cards if you are given the option because it's one of the worst redemptions for your points.

Conclusion

After reviewing the Best Credit cards for Amazon Canada, these were our top picks:

  • Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard

  • Rogers Mastercard®

  • American Express SimplyCash Preferred

  • Rogers World Elite® Mastercard®

  • American Express Cobalt®
